water

Accessible & affordable

Water is one of the most basic requirements for any garden, and one of the most common barriers to long-term success. For many community gardens, the issue is not only whether water is available, but whether it is affordable, reliable, and sustainable.

Why this matters

A garden cannot thrive without a viable water strategy. If access is inconsistent, costs are too high, or infrastructure is weak, the entire site becomes more fragile. In regions facing drought or water scarcity, the challenge becomes even more urgent.

Water is both an operational necessity and a long-term planning issue.

What great looks like

Strong water planning starts early and accounts for source, access, cost, infrastructure, and conservation. It includes practical strategies that support both garden health and responsible resource use.

This may involve municipal hookups, shared water systems, alternative delivery methods, rainwater capture, efficient irrigation, soil-building practices, mulching, and other techniques that help gardens use water wisely.

Where gardens struggle

Some gardens begin with temporary or improvised water access that becomes harder to manage over time. Others face rising costs, infrastructure limitations, or policies that make access more difficult than it should be.

What to start doing now

Assess your current water situation clearly. Where does your water come from? What does it cost? What feels uncertain? Then begin planning for a more stable and resilient approach that supports the garden over the long term.

Reliable water access helps turn a garden from a hopeful effort into a lasting resource.
